However 'blackening' is pejorative. You might try less racist words like 'soiling', or 'staining', or 'besmirching', and use 'reputation' or 'brand' instead of 'name'.

I've never before heard anyone suggest that this word was racist..
Would you say the same about other negative-sounding expressions that include 'black'? eg blackmail, black mark, black market, black magic, black list, black sheep.
