Purpose and result

Hi,

As I know 'so (that)' can be used in 'purpose' and 'result' clauses and in some sentences it's difficult to tell which is which. So in:

1, ' They turned the radio down, so that everyone could hear.'
2. ' They turned the radio down so that everyone could hear.'

Does adding the comma change the clause from 'purpose' to 'result'?

Can 'so that' replace 'with the result that' in the following?
'Large areas of forest have been cut down, with the result that the soil is now dry and dusty.'

Thanks.

nsfs2What does the comma add in this case then?
I read it just as a pause in the speaker's thinking.
