Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.

I would like to know the meaning of "purifying"

1. which purify (which=Forests)

2. which purify (which=the lungs)

3. so which purify (which=Forests)

4. because of purifying

Top answer

Either (1) or (2); it doesn't much matter which because the two are equated, though I personally tend to think of (1) as being the intention. (3) and (4) don't fit grammatically.
