Purge?

Sasssafras tea was drunk on both sides of the Atlantiic, especially as a spring purge.

I wonder what is a 'spring purge.' Is it a kind of beverage?

Thanks in advance!

It's a beverage only in that you drink it. After a monotonous, unhealthy diet of whatever food could be stored through the cold months, it was thought that the body needed a cleansing and rejuvenation. "Spring tonics" created from the earliest plants, like dandelion greens, were supposed to "purify the blood," I believe, whatever that means.
