They also did not know if the expansion would be stopped by gravity and the universe would reverse direction and contract back into the ‘Big Crunch’.
In 1993 Ron Pearson gave a lecture to the Russian Academy of Science which, although not directly mentioned, predicted the accelerating expansion of the universe based on his ‘Big Breed Theory’. This acceleration of the expansion was found, to the surprise of cosmologists, by astronomers in 1998.
