Puncture VS rupture

What is the difference between puncture and rupture?

Top answer

A puncture is simply a small, usually round hole. You can speak about a tyre puncture, a needle puncture etc. A rupture is a somewhat bigger hole (at least compared to puncture) and, unlike puncture, can also be used when talking about relationships and such ( a rupture in our relationship).

I forgot to add.

A rupture occurs when something bursts and , as a result, a hole can be created but the two words (rupture and hole) are not synonymous. My previous post was a bit misleading. Sorry

also, generally speaking, a Rupture generaly is a breach from the inside out and a Puncture refers to a breach from the outside in. Then again that also can come down to a matter of perspective, depending on from which side you stand. This is by no means a difinitive statement, just an observation gathered through experience.

rupture involves something breaking
