Punctuation Within Quotes

I know that single quotes come after the period at the end of a sentence; however, I am wondering what to do when an apostrophe, which shows the omission of a letter, ends a quoted sentence. Does it come before or after the period?

Ex: He drawled, "Quit fidgetin' and jumpin'." or
He drawled, "Quit fidgetin' and jumpin.' "

Top answer

' " It should come before the period because it shows that a letter has been omitted in that space.

  • ' " It should come before the period because it shows that a letter has been omitted in that space.
