Punctuation Usage

Hi, I misused the colon in these two sentences. Please point me in the right direction. How should I change these sentences?


1 In both writing and speaking, it its important that a person understand his/her subject matter: in order to share his/her ideas clearly.

2. An effective communicator will be able to deliver a better presentation: whether written or oral.
