Punctuation rules

Hi everybody.

I´d like to know which of these sentences is incorrect:

John saw my dog, and suddenly, he shouted for help.

John saw my dog and, suddenly, he shouted for help.

In my opinion, in sentence 2 we can delete the words written between commas without taking away its sense. In sentence 1 we can´t do so.

Am I write?

Thanks in advance.
