Punctuation questions

I have doubts concering the punctuation in the sentences found on the internet. Could you take a look?

1. Though called a sea, the landlocked Caspian is actually the largest lake on Earth, covering more than four times the surface area of its closest in size, North America's Lake Superior.

Is it that after "on Earth", the comma is used because of the reference being non-restrictive?

2. Rivaling the pyramids of Egypt or even the ancient cities of the Maya as an achievement, the army of terra-cotta warriors created to protect Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor, in his afterlife is more than 2.000 years old and took 700.000 artisans more than 36 years to complete.

iasadihShould China's first emperor be followed by a comma?
Yes. Parenthetical elements that occur in the middle of a sentence are set off by two commas, not just one.
The commas are necessary because the appositive NP is non-restrictive.
