Punctuation question

Hi there ... just a quickie: can anybody tell me if the comma in the following is necessary?

"The awards were awarded by the American readership of the Zurich University Press titles, Biochemistry Today and Leader in Chemistry."

Thanks,

bob

The comma is not needed. You don't need to pause in that sentence, which the comma asks you to do. You should immediately read the titles, rather than pausing in preparation for an appositive.

  • As a side note, I would avoid phrases such as "awards were awarded," as they're rather trite.
