Punctuation of "which reminds me"

When using "which reminds me", is it treated the same as any other phrase starting with "which" and therefore set off with a comma, or can it begin its own sentence?

"My back's been aching all day, which reminds me, I must make a doctor's appointment for next week."

"My back's been aching all day. Which reminds me, I must make a doctor's appointment for next week."

If it's the latter, is there any specific reason?

Does that mean that it's technically grammatically wrong?
