Punctuation of these two sentences

a. I don’t know if the readers will make that connection (They will probably assume the kid was abducted.), so leaving out the part of the sentence that clarifies this is not a good idea.

b. I don’t know if the readers will make that connection (They will probably assume the kid was abducted.).

Q1. Have I punctuated these sentences correctly?

Q2. Should we say 'I don't know whether' as opposed to 'I don't know if'
