PUNCTUATION MARKS IN ENGLISH

In a speech, we use various intonation patterns, pauses, gestures, and facial expressions to convey meanings and to lay emphasis on what we are saying. In writing, however, we use punctuation marks to help our readers understand what we mean from what they read.

Punctuation marks will show the readers where to pause or stop. It will show them exactly whether what is being said is a statement, a question, or an exclamation. This means that the appropriate use of punctuation marks is an essential prerequisite for effective communication in writing.

Consider the end marks, namely: full stop, question mark, and exclamation mark. These punctuation marks are used to mark the end of different types of sentences in English.

1. The Full Stop: This is called the period in American English. It is used at the end of a declarative sentence (a statement). Examples: A. Joe Biden is the president-elect of the United States of America. B. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The full stop is also used at the end of an imperative sentence (a command). Examples: A. Give the letter to the anyone in the office. B. Send me the pricelist immediately.

2. The Question Mark: This is used to mark the end of an interrogative sentence (a question). Examples: A. Where do you live? B. How are you doing?

3. Exclamation Mark: This is used to mark the end of an exclamatory sentence (an interjection). Examples: A. What a bright weather! B. Ouch! You've broken the windscreen!
