Punctuation in Quotations?

Should there be a comma before the word "trying" to indicate a pause? Or does the exclamation point make the comma unnecessary?

I would shout, “Where?! Where?!” trying in vain to catch a glimpse but was always held down by my seatbelt.

If you put a comma there then you also need one after "glimpse". I would include both those commas and omit the one after "shout". While it is a kind of convention among some to put a comma between a "saying" verb and the following words spoken, to me it seems illogical and unnecessary.
