Punctuation and Quotation marks

I know what to do for entire quotes, but what if you are just putting a single word in quotation marks at the end of a sentence (or clause)?

ie should it be:
The attackers were referred to as "terrorists".
or
The attackers were referred to as "terrorists."

and:

"Luis", our driver, met us.
or
"Luis," our driver, met us.

Other punctuation goes outside the quotation mark ("Luis", our driver, met us), but periods are a bone of contention. I put it outside, even though American style guides put it inside. In some fields, single quotation marks are permitted for such single words or short phrases, in which case AmE usage is to put the period outside.
