Punctuation--Abbreviations

When do we need a period to indicate an abbreviation and when don't we?

Mr (mister)

Dr (doctor)

St (saint)

intr (intransitive)

etc

The period is being phased out of titles. Intr depends on where and how it is used; it is not a standard abbreviation. In formal writing, etc needs a period even when followed by e.g. a comma, but I often omit it– two marks in a row looks very busy.
