Punctuation

Hi teachers! I would like to know which punctuation here is correct.

I saw a meme on the internet about a student receiving the response "I don't know, can you?" After asking his teacher " Can I use the bathroom."

I started to get confused whether or not the comma here is correct. Shouldn't that be a period?

. Shouldn't that be a period? Yes. I'd punctuate it as above.

The teacher means this.

Can I ... asks if I have the ability

May I ... asks for permission.
