Which version is grammatically correct?

Tommy went out saying:  "I'm afraid!"
Tommy went out saying "I'm afraid"
Can a comma or a  colon be placed before the direct object?

You do not need any punctuation after "saying". " Perhaps such people would also put a comma in your sentence. Speaking for myself, I have never understood this practice.

Tommy said, "I'm afraid!"

Perhaps such people would also put a comma in your sentence. Speaking for myself, I have never understood this practice. To me there seems no logical justification for it.
