Hi, are these sentences punctuated correctly?
My petite size, however, was a problem at my audition: I could animate the French horn well enough to be successful, but I struggled to hold it properly. The solution? I was to purchase some ribbon and use it to tie the French horn to my hand.

Slight edit, as I forgot to include this line: On reflection, I believe that it was the French horn’s appearance that appealed to me the most: it was grand, the horn’s tubing and bell were attractive, and I also liked the sound that it made – stringed instruments always sounded too squeaky for my liking.

Slight edit, as I forgot to include this line:
On reflection, I believe that it was the French horn’s appearance that appealed to me the most: it was grand, the horn’s tubing and bell were attractive, and I also liked the sound that it made – stringed instruments always sounded too squeaky for my liking.

The punctuation looks OK to me. "animate" seems an unusual choice of word. "I was to purchase some ribbon " implies that someone instructed you to purchase the ribbon. I'm not sure if you mean that.

By the way, sailsofoblivion, are you actually a native English speaker? I have assumed not purely because most people asking questions here are not, but, as far as I can remember, your English seems native-level ... so if you are a native speaker I will try to remember in future not to bother mentioning things that will already be obvious to you.
