Punctuation?

Hi, I wrote this 100 word story for a Christmas horror competition, and I was hoping someone could tell me if the punctuation that I have used is correct or not?

‘A Gift’

The tree was adorned with gold and silver baubles. Snow had enveloped the house overnight. Jack awoke with a start, and he made his way downstairs. His stepfather was waiting.

“Merry Christmas! Would you like to open a present?” He enquired, smiling.

Jack hated him. He had heard him beat his mother, and he was powerless to stop it.

“No, I want to wait on my mum.”

“She is sleeping. Let her rest!” He retorted.

“Fine.”

He then handed him a lavishly decorated box. Jack opened it, and he gazed in revulsion at what lay within…

His mother’s severed head.
