Hi
Please tell me whether colon is OK here and also tell me which word is apt here.
Recent studies have shown that it is not just one’s immune system that gets adversely affected when one cuts down sleep: Rate/chances of heart failure increases in people with sleep disorders and disturbances.

In my opinion, the colon is not appropriate. I would use a semi-colon or period. Recent studies have shown that it is not just one’s immune system that is adversely affected when one cuts down on sleep ; the chance of heart failure increases in people with sleep disorders and disturbances.

I wish there were an easy explanation.

Some verbs just don't make a lost of sense with "get". "affect" is one of them.

I just wanted to put in a good word for our neglected friend the em dash. You don't see it much on the Internet because the idiot who made the first computer keyboard left it off and gave us the pipe instead, so to speak. You can make an em dash by holding down ALT while typing 0151. I often just use three hyphens on line (---), and the Brits often use space-hyphen-space.
