Grammar

Punctuation

I need help! My HS English teacher gave us these two sentences and asked us to correct the grammar in both. The first one I figured out (with help from Google Emotion: sad ) but the second one has me stumped. Can some one help me please? I have put the original followed by the what I think it should be.

1) Bill, while Mary had had had had had had had had had had had a better effect on the teacher

Answer: Bill, while Mary had had "had", had had "had had". "Had had" had had a better effect on the teacher.

2) as i didnt have i didnt have i had i had had had i had had i had i would have had i did have

(My) Answer: As I didn’t have “I didn’t have”, I had “I had had”. Had I had had “I had” I would have had "I did have”.

Can anyone please help me with the second one?

Hi, 2) as i didnt have i didnt have i had i had had had i had had i had i would have had i did have (My) Answer: As I didn’t have “I didn’t have”, I had “I had had”. Had I had had “I had” I would have had "I did have”. You've done a good job of punctuating the words your teacher gave you.

  • Had I had had “I had” I would have had "I did have”.
  • You've done a good job of punctuating the words your teacher gave you.
  • However, I don't feel the meaning of the sentence is logical.
  • I think it makes better sense to say (omit As) I didn’t have “I didn’t have”, I had “I had had”.

Clive:

Thanks for your response. While I agree that it reads better without the "As" I need to correctly punctuate the sentence without adding, deleting or moving any of the words.

I think the "As" is part of the excersize to point out how to punctuate clauses that begin with words like "As"

If you have any suggestions for punctuation on the sentence as is, they would
