Punctuating two quotations in one sentence that are joined by a connective.

Should I use a period, a comma, or nothing after the word BOY in the following sentence?

Remarks, such as “Oh there’s my good boy.” or “Look at my big helper!” dishonor his integrity.

According to the style manuals I've seen, use nothing, but remove the comma after "Remarks".

I'd write both sentences in italics thus avoiding the dilemma.
