punctuating direct speech

Hi everyone,

I was wondering how best to punctuate this sentence:

Lots of people come up to me and say, my son or daughter wants to start dating; what should i do?

Seeing as it's direct speech, i assume inverted commas are needed, but I'm not quite sure how to do it: Like this-

A) Lots of people come up to me and say, "My son" or "My daughter wants to start dating; what should i do?"

Or like this--

B) Lots of people come up to me and say, "My son or my daughter wants to start dating; what should i do?"

The latter is obviously a little misleading as the people are saying one of either "my son" or "my daughter", but somehow A) doesn't quite seem right either.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance
