Punctuating a question within a question.

In the following double question, where does the question mark go, inside or outside of the quotation mark? I think it should go outside the quotation marks because the whole sentence is a question not just the quote.

Are you the person who asked, "Why"?
or
Are you the person who asked, "Why?"

I suppose logically you need two question marks, one inside and one outside, but that might look a bit awkward. Of the two versions you present, I personally prefer the question mark outside the quotes.

The AP Style Book says to a single question mark, at the conclusion of what is being quoted.

Are you the person who asked "Why?"

However, since it's a matter of style and not grammar, there isn't a hard-and-fast correct answer.
