Pump in, close quarters

Advocate Shahid Azmi (32), who was defending Fahim Ansari in the 26/11 terror attack trial, was shot dead by three unidentified men who pumped in five bullets at close quarters on Thursday night

Ansari is one of the two Indians facing charges of having helped in preparing a map of terror targets for the 26/11 gunmen.

The sudden and violent death occurred at around 8.10 pm when the three, posing as prospective clients, arrived at the residential complex in an autorickshaw. Four bullets hit Azmi, who had been defending several accused in key bomb blasts cases.

Could you please explain to me the emboldened parts?

Thank you Mister Micawber.
I wonder what "close quarters" means here. The word "quarter" has lots of different meanings in dictionaries, and I don't know what applies here.
