Pumas or the puma? are or was?

Please see the sentence: Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America.

When i try to describe some sort of animal I must use the plural? I can't use "the puma" here?
And I think the "are found in America" should be "was", for it means the animal was found in America firstly, so it is past. Am I right?^_^
