Pull up a chair

When you want somebody to join you while you are having meals or taling to other people, can I say

Pull up a char instead of why don't you join me/us? or When you say' pull up a chair', does it acutally ask the person to bring his own chair and sit and join you?

If there is a chair at the table, I would probably invite the person to "have a seat". "Pull up a chair" to me sounds like the person might have to borrow one from a neighboring table. I wouldn't worry very much about it though....the intent is clear.
