Pull under?

What does 'pull me under' mean? Why not 'pull me down'? 'Under'?? Is this expression grammatically correct? I don't find any entry for that phrase in my dictionaries...

An ocean wave, or worse--a shark or a gator, can 'pull you under'. and it doesn't have to be as nasty as a sea monster. Or are you looking for a grammatical explanation?

An ocean wave, or worse--a shark or a gator, can 'pull you under'. Usually there is an implied object or place under which you are pulled...and it doesn't have to be as nasty as a sea monster.

Not really this time.

Actually, this one is a great grammatical explanation:

there is an implied object or place under which you are pulled
