Pull the plug

Hi

A little girl wanted to remove a film from a cine-camera. She went to the bathroom.

She had never handled one before, so what she had to do took a little time. And she pulled the plug twice,

just to make quite certain. She had no qualms over what she was doing.

What "plug" was she pulling twice? When I see the phrase "pull the plug" I imagine there's a socket and someone pulls out the plug of the socket just to disconnect something, for example a refrigerator.

When and where did this story take place?

I am not aware of the idiom "pull the plug" in modern American English.

(I fully agree that 'flush' is the meaning, however.)
