Pull back on the throttle

Hi,

If my dad is constantly overstretching himself (he spends too much time at work and he engages in strenuous activities), could I tell him that he should 'pull back on the throttle'? I know that it means 'to reduce the speed,' but I was wondering that it could perhaps be used in this way as well.

Thank you.
