Psychology master motivation letter

Hello everyone, I am actually new to this and I've never asked a question on a forum, but I need help with my motivation letter. I am applying for a university in UK that doesn't specify how long the motivation letter should be. I have written a letter that really expresses my motives but it is too long. I don't really know how to make it shorter and I wish I could send it as it is. Can you tell me please if it would be okay to send it the way it is? And if I need to take out some elements that won't affect my motivation, what could they be? Thank you in advance.

Here it is, 920 words:

Dear Sir or Madam,

With this letter, I am applying for a position in the Master of Research in Clinical Psychology program, offered at the University of Hertfordshire. I recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and currently enrolled in a master’s program at the Lebanese University.

Being a child of a mixed interracial marriage has always been a challenge for me. It was never easy for me to discover who I really am. Am I Lebanese? Or am I Romanian? How can I be both at the same time? Finding my identity and building my personality have always been major parts of my life. Growing up, I was constantly having identity issues and asking myself: what builds a personality? What are its components? What contributes to it? What about self-image and self-confidence? I noticed the importance of language in identity building, the differences in thinking patterns from one culture to another, found that they can have some similarities that can unite them and help them interact and live with each other and all of this made me realize that all human beings are similar in some way. I started creating my own personality with my own beliefs and values, combining two cultures in one identity and this whole situation were, without me realizing it, building my love for psychology and curiosity to understand the complexity of a human being’s psyche.

Living in different cities has opened my eyes to a lot of differences and similarities in human behavior and has widened my perspective. It has shown me the richness of belonging to different cultures. From living in Abu Dhabi, a cosmopolitan and international city, to moving to Lebanon, a completely different environment, and having to live far from my family to be able to complete my studies, I had to fast learn how to adapt, become independent and rely on myself. Working as a cashier besides studying has grown in me this sense of responsibility and has developed my confidence and communication skills. This has all allowed me to meet and interact with people from all over the world, developing compassion, understanding, empathy, open-mindedness and a no judgment mentality. It has even developed my language skills as I am able now to communicate in five different languages.

Coming to Lebanon, I became conscious of many society problems that I was never really aware of. One of these problems is the huge number of street children that shocked me, which is why I wish to conduct more research on this matter and offer psychological help for such cases. I’ve always known that I wanted to work with human beings and wanting to become a psychologist comes mainly from the desire to offer as much help as possible for marginalized people, people who are being victims of injustice or abuse, and NGO work really fascinates me. I want to help people see who they really are, see their potential and how strong they can be, to take responsibility of their own lives and stop accepting being victims, making peace with their past, not allowing it to determine their future and control their lives and using it to build a better one. To me, the idea of leadership is not exclusive to organizational psychology and coaching techniques, it is something that everyone can work on and become a leader in their own everyday lives. This concept really got into me from the works of one of the world's top leadership experts Robin Sharma.

Reading is a real passion to me, going from books related to psychology, with Freud, Jung, Francoise Dolto, Carl Rogers and many others to any other genre of books that can broaden my perspective and make me ask myself questions I’ve never thought about before. Nature, music and drawing are other very big and important parts of my life as I can’t imagine life without them, and this explains my curiosity and interest in therapies including art and music and their effects on people, which I hope I could include someday in my future career.

Being very enthusiastic and motivated for this major, curious minded and hungry to learn everything I could pushes me to get involved in many volunteering experiences and my love of traveling and meeting new cultures is actually one of the biggest reasons for me to apply for such an international university in such an international country as the UK.

In fact, the combination of theory and skills training, the variety of teaching formats with interactive classes, the personal and challenging education in a world-class university known worldwide for its high quality education is very appealing to me.

Analyzing and diagnosing psychological problems, discovering the factors that cause and maintain mental disorders and treating them is what attracts me to Clinical psychology, which is a very wide major that covers a large variety of problems and gives me the chance to discover my preferences, the areas that interest me the most and the population I would love to work with as it allows me to apply my knowledge and practice to all kinds of people and psychological problems.

I am certain that the knowledge and skills learned from my professional experience, university, and extracurricular activities would make me a valuable addition to the Masters of Clinical Psychology program offered at Hertfordshire University.

Thank you in advance for considering my application, with your assistance, I can continue my schooling in clinical psychology to offer the right help to those in need.

Best Regards,
