That's interesting. I think you can you use the word in two different ways. "Let's keep rational about this - try to ground ourselves in the rationality of what you did. You got drunk because you were upset about the argument"
And, yes, you can also use the word to mean when a person gives bad reasons for what they've done. I think either meaning can work

In the UK ,"they/them/their" are often used as gender-non-specific.
If people insist on the singular, you're entitled to doubt them
