Psychology!

Hi.
'The focus of functionalism, one of psychology' schools of thought, was on how behaviour actually works to help people live in their environment. Functionalists believed that consciousness existed as a more continuous and changing process.'
Are the above statements contradictory? Should not it be said that functionalism studied how human consciousness worked to help people adopt to their environment? Thank you in advance.

kunsusuki Are the above statements contradictory? I don't see that they are even closely related. The first sentence offers a definition of 'functionalism', while the second sentence is a functionalist description of 'consciousness'.
