Psychology

I just heard someone say she had written some books on psychology. She pronounced the beginning of the latter word like ( ps- ). In several books on phonetics this way of saying it is not mentioned at all. The word is said to be pronounced ( s- ). I only found one exception to this in : Axel van Wijk - Rules of Pronunciation for the English Language, p.119 : " It is further frequently silent before s in compounds or derivates containing the Greek words 'pseudo-' and 'psyche' ". So 'frequently silent', not always.

Could this be considered as a less serious pronunciation and is one joking a little bit when saying it like this ? Or would this pronunciation be regional ? Or affected ?

  • [/nq] Certainly the letter psi is pronounced /ps/ in both classical and Modern Greek; correctly, the words in English starting with this letter combination ought properly to sound the /p/.
