Providing free Internet access

Topic: In some countries, many people do not have enough money to access the Internet. Some people believe that governments should be responsible for ensuring that everyone can get free access to the Internet. Others, however, argue that we should pay for Internet access. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

In this day and age, the Internet has come to play a central role in our life as a source of information on almost everything. Therefore, ensuring that all citizens can access the Internet is one of the government's responsibilities. Besides some benign drawbacks, I believe that this equipment merits government spending.

We derive manifold benefits from the Internet. First of all, this equipment provides educational opportunities for marginalized people. Distance education programs allow students from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend classes remotely, cutting down the need for travel, and reducing educational inequality. Secondly, subsidizing the purchases of this equipment is a driving force behind the improvement of healthcare systems. The Internet allows physicians much greater access to medical resources. With the usage of the Internet, doctors in rural areas can communicate with experts all over the world in order to develop the quality of diagnoses and treatment. The widespread use of the Internet has also opened a new area of jobs and expanded the availabilities of working from home.

On the other hand, giving free Internet access can bring benign drawbacks to low-income countries. It will cost a huge amount of money and to some extent affect the economy. There are a large number of companies earning money from supplying this equipment. Therefore, this tendency can have negative impacts on them.

Nowadays, the Internet has evolved from a luxury to a necessity. In order not to lag behind other countries, I believe the government should direct funding toward investing in free Internet access for all citizens.
