Provided

Hello,

I have been reading about conditional subordinates such as unless,as long as, provided (that), providing (that) e.t.c.
The 'that' is given braces .

Does it mean 'that' is not mandatory?

Top answer

The brackets do, indeed, mean that the use of 'that' is not mandatory. It is common to have 'that' omitted in natural (British) English, especially in speech.

do not put stops after the first two letters in that abbreviation. Most speakers of BrE would not put a stop after the final letter, either.
