Proverbs

Hello, I am studying English and I sometimes have difficulties with expressions and proverbs. It's really intersting knowing these angles of a language but sometimes, there are sentences that I just don't understand. The last I read was "go to rack and ruin . Can anybody explain me what it means ?
I am sorry I don't really remember the sentence which the expression was. But it was about an old factory. Thank you very much for your help!

An alternative and more traditional spelling is 'wrack and ruin'.
