Proverbs

Hello,

Is it possible to omit the first 'as' in all the three proverbs and use either 'a' or 'the' interchangeably? (Especially in American English)

As silent as the/a dead.
As silent as the/a grave.
As silent as the/a tomb.

Thanks

You may omit the first 'as' casually. 'A dead' is not possible and the other 'a's are not the native collocation for these proverbial similes.
