prototype

A: When do you think a prototype will be available?
B: One should be available this month.

In A's words, prototype is a bit different. Which easier word(s) can replace it? 'Sample product' hits me, but it sounds different from a prototype. A sample product seems like a small quantity product.

Top answer

The prototype is the first form or model of a newly designed product, a single entity. A sample is one example of a product (usually free) of which many have been manufactured and are available for sale. For this reason, the dialog seems wrong to my ear, and replacing 'prototype' with 'sample' seems a good idea for improving it.
