protective/protected.

Please help me explain "protective" and "protected". I don't know how to use them correctly. I always make mistakes with them. For example in the following sentence I chose "protected" but my brother chose "protective". I am confused. Please help.

"My mother always buys protective/protected foods in this shop."

Thanks very much.
