I should kick you in the Taint because answer is totally wrong. The protagonist is the character that struggles with something (another person, grief ext). The antagonist is the source of the protagonist's problems. It does not have to be a person, although it often is. The antagonist can also be something like the environment say something like the book/film Into the Wild)
