Prosit

Hi.

Can we end informal letters with prosit?

Have you ever seen such a word used?

Dictionaries indicate that it is synonymous with cheers, so I thought when cheers can be used, prosit might be used too.

Thansk for your help and time in advance

Hi, 'Prosit' (taken from German) is a word used when we make a toast while drinking. It is not used to end a letter. The word 'cheers' can be used both ways.

I have never seen this word before that I can remember. I don't know that it would actually be incorrect, but it might be confusing as it is not a word that is in common use in the US. Depending on who you are writing to, sincerely is usually a good choice. You could also use a simple thank you, or yours truly. For an informal letter, cheers would be fine.

As Clive mentioned, prosit is "used to wish good health, success, etc., esp. as a toast in German-speaking countries." Of Latin origin meaning "may it benefit".

Not in the U.S. Nobody will have any idea what you're saying. Well - almost nobody.
