Prosecution, defence

A Patna fast track on Saturday sentenced three persons to life sentence in connection with NHAI engineer Satyendra Dubey murder case.
Additional district judge of fast track court-V pronounced the verdict. Senior CBI lawyer L R Ansari told The Indian Express: "As it was not rarest of rare case with murder with intention of robbery, both prosecution and defence pleaded the court of punishment deemed fit in the case by the court".
All the three accused - currently lodged in Beur jail, were taken to court in police van. Mother of one of the accused Mantu was seen crying on sitting on court stairs after the verdict.
Dubey's family, however, stayed away from the court saying they had "little interest in the case as no big fishes getting caught by CBI". Satyendra Dubey's brother Dhananjay Dubey said: "Only small fries have got sentence".

Please explain to me the emboldened parts

Though I guess "prosecution" is a lawyer who argues against the culprit in a court and "Defence" is a lawyer who argues in favour of the same culprit.

If it's correct, I wonder then in the above case why even "Defence" recommended for "court of punishment" to the culprit when his duty is to defend them.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, prosecution tries to prove that the accused committed a crime. Defense represents the accused. This article is difficult for me to understand, but I would interpret it as saying that neither side thought the sentence was appropriate.

Yes you are right. A Prosecutor (The spokesperson for the Prosecution) is a person who prosecutes (acts on behalf on whoever is bring the action - In this case the State/Crown) The Defence argues on behalf of the Defendant (the person whom the case is being brought against)

FWIW, I also find this hard to understand. "pleaded the court of punishment deemed fit in the case by the court" is not correct English in any form that I recognise.

I didn't understand either, hence I didn't comment on it. I do wonder though if it got lost in translation and should say "both counsels deemed that punishment sentenced by the court fitted the crime."

Again I don't know why both legal teams should be happy with the outcome, but we don't have the full details and also we aren't privy to any agreement between the parties.
