Proportional or in direct proportion to

Can a native speaker please tell me what they think?

Can you use proportional or direct proportion like this or do I have to use a different word?

1 The player's skills in the video game are proportional/are in direct proportion to his skills in real life. A good player in real life will be good in the game.

Thank you

What's the difference between "proportional" and "in proportion to", could you tell me if you like both as much and if it's idiomatic please?

I have left both in your sentence untouched, meaning that I found no fault in them. Please remember from now on that that is how I present my corrections: if the text is OK, I do not change it.
