Properly using you & I

My sixth grader questioned the teacher today with this sentence:

My dad gave a present to Pete and I.

She asked the teacher "shouldn't that say My dad gave a present to Pete and me."

?

She has always been taught if you can take away one of the names (Pete/I) and the sentence made sense that would be the correct sentence.

Have I been wrong all these years in my teachings with her?
