Proper word use

Does anyone know whether affiliative is an accepted term? I have seen it used in academic writing but have found that it isn't listed in Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. It is, however, listed as a derivative term in the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary. I'm just wondering how legitimate this word is considered to be for use in writing. Thanks very much for your feedback and help.

w=affiliative&ls=a ), but if Oxford likes it, then you can safely use it, I think.
