Proper use of "is" and "are"
Please help me figure out which is correct:
"Enclosed is an original and one copy of the document." .... or
"Enclosed are an original and one copy of the document."

I thought "are" was the only option in those kinds of sentences, but I once asked here about something similar, and I was told that both plural and singular verbs are likely to be used. In other words, neither would sound particularly odd.

Both are correct but think of the first sentence as if the second part is an afterthought.
Enclosed is an original [pause...] and one copy of the document.
It's more like two separate thoughts.
Personally though I would say something like: "Please find enclosed the original and a copy of the document." or "

I've read that in BrE, when "There" begins a sentence 'is' is used if the first noun is singular, and 'are' is used if the first noun is plural. However, in AmE, either 'is' or 'are' can be used.

On second thought, there could be an explanation. I remember this explanation:
There is a cat and a dog ---> There is a cat and (there is) a dog
So this could work too, after all:

If this question comes in a grammar test, I would definitely pick 'are' but 'is' is very common in spoken English.

In a sentance that states: If the above criteria is met . . . should it be: If the above criteria are met when speaking of more than one criteria?
