Proper use of multiple verbs in a past tense situation

Who can explain why one of the following sentences is the correct one? Explain the rules of grammar behind your explanation ;
1. He helped me make an A in my exams.
2. He helped me made an A in my exams.

The second is wrong. we need the infinitive form 'make' after HELP.. It would be far more natural to use 'gain/achieve/get' than 'make' in this sentence
